THE COMMUNITY NEED Since Emma House opened in 1992, Calgary’s population has grown almost 50 per cent while the cost of housing has grown approximately 450 per cent. This has made Calgary increasingly unaffordable and has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of homeless people— including homeless pregnant women. Although Calgary has more than 50 agencies working to address homelessness, only three—including Emma House—are focused solely on meeting the needs of pregnant women. Collectively, these three agencies can accommodate about 15 women at a time. Other pregnant women are being forced to live in temporary emergency shelters—not knowing from one night to the next where they will stay. The need for Emma House’s services is greater now than it ever has been. To fulfill that need, we require your help.
THE MINISTRY NEED Since 1992, Emma House has been blessed by a relatively small but very committed group of Christian individuals, churches and businesses. Their sacrificial support has enabled Emma House, throughout its almost 18-year history, to rent a succession of single-family homes in southwest Calgary that have been capable of housing up to three expectant women at a time, plus live-in staff. Then in 2007, thanks to a very generous donation from one of its long-time supporters, Emma House was finally able to acquire its own building - an almost 50 year old bungalow in southwest Calgary. This "new" residence was too small ( at 1,050 square feet) to meet Emma House's long term needs. Several of its facilities were also out dated. And so $165,000 of renovations and expansions were initiated and completed in 2008. To finance it, Emma House secured a mortgage and conducted a capital campaign though out southern Alberta. The result: Emma House has finally fulfilled a long time goal for a secure and stable future by owning it's own home, with affordable mortgage payments. However, Emma House must continue to make those payments, and pay a variety of other ongoing operating costs. The ministry also needs to accumulate savings for eventual costs such as house repairs and a new van to transport our residents to and from doctor appointments, hospitals, church, etc. Therefore, the ministry continues to need support from existing and potentially new Emma House Society members. |
